Different rules, no exit, and nothing else in this line addresses it.
A parent who is declining. A sibling who cannot manage his own life. An adult child who is in trouble. A relative in your business who should not be.
Why it is harder
Four features, and every one of them removes a tool you use everywhere else.
You cannot fire anybody.
Chapter Fourteen does not exist here. The relationship continues regardless of the outcome, which means every hard conversation has to be survivable indefinitely.
There is no scope.
A crew has a job description. Family has no edges, and the question of what you are responsible for arrives at ten at night with no framework attached, and it arrives again in four months in a different form.
The history is in the room.
You are not deciding as a competent adult. You are deciding as somebody's son or somebody's brother, and thirty years of positioning arrives with the decision whether or not you invited it.
And it is not one decision.
It recurs. A business problem gets solved. A brother who cannot manage money is a twenty-year condition, and men keep treating installment eleven as a fresh problem.
The three questions
Before you take something on. Five minutes and it prevents most of the damage.
Is this a crisis or a pattern?
A crisis is a one-time event that a person cannot handle alone. Help without hesitation.
A pattern is the eleventh instance of the same thing, and helping the eleventh time is not help. It is participation, and it guarantees a twelfth.
Men handle instance eleven as though it were instance one, every time, because each one arrives with its own urgency.
Am I helping or am I preventing a consequence he needs?
The hardest question in this chapter.
Some consequences are formative and removing them removes the only teacher available. And some consequences are catastrophic and irreversible and should be prevented.
The test is whether the consequence is survivable and instructive, or permanent and destructive. Those get different answers and men apply one policy to both.
And what does this cost the people already in my house?
The question nobody asks.
Money that leaves your household, hours that come out of your children's, and a level of stress your wife absorbs.
Your family did not vote on this and they are paying part of it.
The boundary that works
Not a refusal. A defined amount, decided in advance.
I can do this much and I cannot do more than that.
Written down for yourself before the conversation, because a boundary set during the conversation will be set by the pressure in the room.
Three properties.
A number or a duration. Two thousand dollars or through March. Not as long as it takes, which is not a boundary.
Stated once, plainly, without an argument attached. The reasoning invites negotiation and Chapter Twelve is the mechanism.
And held. The first test of it determines whether it exists, and there will be a test, usually inside six weeks.
The conversation, written out
Because a boundary in your head does not survive contact with somebody you love.
“`
"I've thought about it and here's what I can do.
I can put in two thousand and I can do it this month.
That's what I have. It's not the beginning of a
conversation about more.
I'm not going to be able to do this again in the spring,
and I want to say that now rather than in the spring."
[Stop. Do not explain the reasoning.]
“`
Three sentences and a limit, and the third one is the whole thing.
Naming the next occurrence in advance is what separates a boundary from a delay, and it is the sentence men leave out, and its absence is why they are having the identical conversation in eleven months.
And do not explain. Chapter Fifteen. The reasoning invites negotiation, and with family the negotiation has thirty years of leverage in it.
The sibling case
Specific because it is the most common and the least discussed.
A brother who cannot manage his own life, and you are the one who can.
Four things that are usually true.
You have been the one for a long time and everybody in the family has organized around that, including your parents.
Nobody has ever named it, which means there is no agreement, no allocation, and no end.
He is not grateful in the way you expect, and that is a real and common experience and it is worth understanding rather than resenting.
A man receiving repeated help from a sibling who has it together is receiving evidence of his own position, every single time, and the receiving costs him something you do not see.
And you are angrier about it than you have admitted.
What to actually do.
Name the pattern out loud, once, to him. Not an accusation. This is the fourth time and I want to talk about the pattern rather than this instance.
Then set the boundary with the next-occurrence sentence in it.
And separate the money from the relationship. A man who withdraws financially and also withdraws personally has ended something. The money can have a limit and the relationship should not.
I am not able to do this again and I am not going anywhere.
Both sentences. Same conversation. Most men say only one of them, and which one they say determines whether they have set a boundary or ended a relationship.
The parent version
Specific, because it is coming for nearly every man reading this and almost nobody has prepared.
A parent who is declining, and the decisions arrive faster than you can develop a framework.
Three things to do before it starts.
Have the conversation while everybody is healthy. What they want. Where the documents are. Who decides if they cannot.
Uncomfortable, fifteen minutes, and it prevents an enormous amount later, and men wait for a reason and then have it under conditions nobody would choose.
Find out who else is going to help, specifically, and get it stated. Siblings assume and do not allocate, and the default allocation is that whoever lives closest does everything and resents it for a decade.
And know that you cannot fix it. A declining parent is not a problem to be solved, and a man who approaches it as one will fail and interpret the failure as inadequacy.
The family member in your business
Brief and direct, because this one has an answer.
He gets the same standard as everybody else or the standard does not exist.
Everybody in the building knows whether he does. Built to Last covers what an exemption teaches, and the short version is that it teaches that the rules depend on who you are.
If you cannot hold him to it, he should not work there, and that is a hard sentence and it is considerably kinder than four years of everybody working around him.
And if you do let him go, that is a family event rather than an employment event, and you should know that going in and decide whether you can carry it.
