Most men are running on labels somebody else assigned them.
A title from a job. A role from a family. A reputation from a version of himself that stopped being accurate a decade ago. He keeps performing it because the performance is working, and because the box is uncomfortable but it is known, and known beats free for most of a man’s life.
Then something cracks. A layoff, a diagnosis, a marriage that goes quiet, a birthday with a zero in it. And he discovers that the thing he built his identity on was rented.
I want to say something about the systems men work inside, because this is where it gets misunderstood. The dysfunction in your company or your church is usually not broken. It is functioning exactly as designed, producing precisely the outcomes it was built to produce, and everyone has agreed not to say so. That is why complaining changes nothing and why leaving changes nothing either. The next place is designed the same way.
Challenging it requires two things at once, and most men only ever have one. Boldness without grace makes you the difficult guy nobody listens to. Grace without boldness makes you agreeable and useless. Together they make a man impossible to dismiss.
Something else worth naming. Imposter syndrome is not always a lie to be talked out of. Sometimes a man feels like a fraud because he is performing a role he never chose, and the honest fix is not more confidence in the performance. It is a different role.
Titles change. Influence does not. Build the thing that outlasts the job description, because the job description is going to change without asking you.
