Most men over thirty-five do not have close friends and almost none of them will say so.
They have men they know. That is a different thing and the difference is the chapter.
How it happened
Nobody decided. It accumulated, through entirely ordinary steps.
Friendship in a man's twenties ran on proximity. School, work, a shared apartment, a shared season. He did not build those friendships. They were produced by circumstance and he mistook the product for a skill.
Then the circumstances ended. Jobs changed, people moved, marriages started, children arrived.
And nothing replaced the mechanism, because he had never had one. He had never in his life initiated a friendship on purpose, and at thirty-eight he discovered he did not know how.
Then the remaining friendships organized around activity. Golf, work, church, a game. He sees men regularly and nothing is exchanged, and he has known some of them fifteen years and could not tell you what any of them is dealing with.
The three things that keep it in place
Initiating feels like admitting a need.
A man calling another man to get together, with no activity attached and no reason, feels to him like a confession of loneliness, and he would rather not.
So he waits, and the other man is doing exactly the same thing, and they wait for each other for a decade.
Depth requires going first.
Somebody has to say a true thing before the other man will, and going first is exposure, and Chapter Twenty is the whole subject.
Both men are waiting to be given permission and neither will issue it.
And there is no structure.
Women's friendships frequently have a recurring mechanism attached. Men's do not. Without a repeating slot, a friendship runs on spontaneous initiation, and spontaneous initiation is exactly what the first item above prevents.
The cost
You have nobody to tell. Chapter Twenty. The practical center of this book is unavailable to a man with no candidates.
You cannot be corrected. A man with no close friends has no one with standing to say he is wrong, which means Chapter Twenty-Seven's second item is empty.
Your wife carries all of it. Which she was not built for and cannot put down, and it changes the marriage in ways neither of you can name.
And it is a health issue. I am not going to overstate what I know, but the association between isolation and outcomes in men is well established, and men treat it as a soft subject.
The mechanism that actually works
Not more social events. One thing, repeating, with one or two men.
Put it on the calendar. Weekly or every other week. Same time. It does not move.
Coffee, breakfast, a truck ride, a standing walk. The activity does not matter and it should be low enough friction that it survives a bad week.
Two or three men maximum. A group of eight is an event. Two men in a truck is a conversation, and depth requires the second thing.
And it takes about four months. The first several are surface. That is not failure, it is the necessary period, and men who expect depth in week two conclude it is not working and stop.
Going first
The whole instruction and it is one sentence.
You go first, every time, until he starts going first too.
You initiate. You say the slightly truer thing. You ask the second question after his first answer.
He is in the same condition you are. He is waiting for the same permission. He will not initiate and if you wait for him you will both wait until you are sixty.
And most men, given the opening, take it immediately. That is what men who have done this report almost universally. One sentence of honesty produces a considerably larger response than it should, because the other man has been holding something too.
The first call
The specific obstacle is the initiating call, and men do not make it because they do not have words for it.
Here is the whole script.
Hey, I have been meaning to do this for a while. Any chance you want to get breakfast every couple weeks? Nothing in particular, I just realized I do not see anybody outside of work anymore.
Twenty-eight words and it does three things.
It names the absence of a reason, which removes the need for one.
It admits the condition, which is going first, which is the entire chapter in one clause.
And it proposes a repeating slot rather than an event, which is the mechanism.
Almost nobody says no to that. Men who have made this call report the same thing, which is that the other man responds with something close to relief, because he was in the same condition and would never have initiated.
What the first four months sound like
So a man does not evaluate it too early.
Month one: work, trucks, kids' sports, whatever men talk about. Zero depth and that is correct. You are establishing that the slot exists.
Month two: somebody mentions something slightly real, usually near the end, usually on the way out. That is the surface being tested.
Month three: one of you asks a second question after the other's first answer. That is the actual turn and it is almost imperceptible.
Month four: something true gets said. Not a disclosure. A true sentence where a reflexive one usually goes, and the other man does not flinch, and that is when it becomes a friendship rather than a standing appointment.
Almost nobody gets there because almost nobody makes it past month one, and month one feels like it is not working, and that is the design.
The three things that kill it
Making it about an activity. If the thing has content, the content will fill the time and nothing will be exchanged. Breakfast works because there is nothing to do.
Letting it move. The first time it moves it becomes negotiable. The second time it stops existing. It does not move.
And expanding it. A third and fourth man turns a conversation into a gathering, and men perform in gatherings. Two is the number.
The men who are already there
Before you go looking, check what you have.
Most men have two or three men they have known for years, with whom nothing has ever been exchanged.
Those are not failed friendships. They are unopened ones, and a fifteen-year foundation of ordinary contact is a considerably better starting point than a stranger.
Pick one. Put something on the calendar. Go first.
That is easier than building something new and men skip it because they think a friendship that never went deep is a friendship that cannot.
The three seasons that make it harder
Because the obstacle is different depending on where a man is, and the generic advice fails for that reason.
Young children. Every hour is spoken for and he genuinely does not have discretionary time.
The answer is to attach it to something already happening. A Saturday morning while the kids are at practice. A ride to the same place you were both going anyway. Do not try to create new time. Occupy existing time differently.
Peak career. He has time on paper and it is all fragmented and claimed.
The answer is that it has to be a fixture or it will be the first thing that moves, permanently, and this is the season where men lose the most.
After a move. Everybody he knew is somewhere else and he has to build from zero at forty-five, which he has never done.
The answer is proximity over affinity. Do not look for a man you have a lot in common with. Look for a man you will repeatedly be near and build from there. Affinity follows repetition considerably more often than repetition follows affinity.
What it looks like at five years
The reason to start, described plainly.
A man who has done this for five years has one or two men who know the actual condition of his life.
They have watched him through a hard stretch. They have told him he was wrong about something and he changed.
He has told them things he has told nobody else, and the telling is now ordinary rather than an event.
He does not rehearse around them.
And when something goes badly, which it will, there is a call to make that is not to his wife and not to a professional, and that call is the difference between a man who has a hard year and a man who has a hard year alone.
Almost no man over forty has that and almost every man over forty needs it, and the entire cost of building it was one uncomfortable phone call and four months of ordinary breakfasts.
The biblical version
Brief, because the pattern is plain.
